Muse is designed to be seamlessly incorporated into proprietary system environments, operating as a "middleware" system, or interoperability agent. Muse can sit bewteen two other computer systems and facilitate communications between them, or between the end-user and other systems — allowing the user to perform tasks on all of the systems simultaneously. Muse offers components for both receiving messages (Bridges) and for initiating them (Source Packages). Both are capable of protocol and format translation, character re-encoding, semantic mapping and more, so that virtually any message can be converted to any other. As a session manager, Muse is able to initiate, run and close a complete session on a target system in response to a single message from a client system, and vice versa.
