I am trying to upgrade Muse and after a point the installer stops unexpectedly. The ${MUSE_HOME}/install.log file contains "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space" errors.

Due to the large number of Muse components and the complex logic used by Muse Setup more memory it is needed to run Muse Setup, since the default 64M is just not enough. For this reason, when upgrading to Muse 2600, it is recommended to have installed the latest build of JDK 1.6 or JDK 1.7 available. Upgrading to Muse 2600 on systems with JDK versions smaller than 1.6 Update 18 may result in OutOfMemory errors, if the "muse-setup.jar" is used. To avoid this problem, start Muse Setup running with higher memory values as follows:
java -Xmx512M -Xms256M -jar muse-setup.jar

It is unlikely that these OutOfMemory errors will appear when using Muse 2600 executable package distributions. However, if the same happens with Muse 2600 executable package distributions then use "muse-setup.jar" instead, as instructed above, running with higher memory values: java -Xmx512M -Xms256M -jar muse-setup.jar

"In JDK 1.6 update 18 (http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/6u18-142093.html) it was updated the Client JVM heap configuration:
In the Client JVM, the default Java heap configuration has been modified to improve the performance of today's rich client applications. Initial and maximum heap sizes are larger and settings related to generational garbage collection are better tuned.
The default maximum heap size is half of the physical memory up to a physical memory size of 192 megabytes and otherwise one fourth of the physical memory up to a physical memory size of 1 gigabyte.
For example, if your machine has 128 megabytes of physical memory, then the maximum heap size is 64 megabytes, and greater than or equal to 1 gigabyte of physical memory results in a maximum heap size of 256 megabytes."
