Why do I have errors in Tomcat logs?

If the log entries (${MUSE_HOME}/tomcat/logs/) are of the following type

File lock last access timestamp: May 31, 2013

/opt/muse/xmldb/webapps/exist/WEB-INF/../../../db/dbx_dir.lck

they point a Tomcat process killing rather than a normal stop. Not waiting for a complete shutdown or killing the Tomcat process may lead to inconsistencies in the XMLDB and further to data loss.

 

Errors of the form

Error: Exception thrown by the agent : java.rmi.server.ExportException: Port already in use: 8050; nested exception is: java.net.BindException: Address already in use

point that a port that Tomcat needs is already in use - in this case 8050. This may be caused either by another program using that port or even another Tomcat instance that didn't shut down completely before a new Tomcat start.
