Muse® Application Home Page

The Home page of a Muse® Application provides useful browse information such as promoted books/journals/articles, Titles A to Z functionality, list of subscribed publishers and their products, third party links to external resources and a data feed (RSS or Atom).

Overview

The information in the Home page is organized into configurable widgets that can be customized by the administrator in terms of content and position. The main search form with all search options are directly available in this page to launch a new search at any time.

The application is entirely customizable through the Muse® Console for Application Administration (MCAA), from logos, header, footer and contact information to a variety of color themes.

Widgets

The content of the widgets from the Home page can be static, configured by the administrator, like a list with the recommended titles and subscribed publishers, a list with external useful links, or it can be dynamic, like for example a RSS or Atom news feed.

The widgets are fully managed through the Muse® Console for Application Administration (MCAA) by drag-and-drop in any place in the application's layout (left, right, top, bottom) and multiplied as many times as needed. The complete list of widgets available for the Home page are:

  • New: Books and Journals, displaying the list with the titles recommendations;
  • Our Most Popular Titles, showing the most accessed titles;
  • Titles A to Z;
  • Publishers, displaying the list of subscribed publisher platforms/products. Organized in tiles by the publisher logo, the widget shows a description of the publisher along with the list of subscriptions, allowing the navigation using the institutional subscription;
  • Resources, showing all resources available for search organized by their categories. A description of the resource can be viewed, and the link to the resource's home page can be accessed using the institutional subscription;
  • Popular Searches, showing the top most used queries by the users of the Muse® Application;
  • Important Links, displaying a list with external useful links. A description for each link can be specified;
  • RSS Feed, showing the items retrieved from a RSS feed, usually the institution's News feed.

Titles A to Z

The A to Z index provides an alphabetical listing of the subscribed titles of books and journals. The search functionality allows to find more quickly a specific subscribed tile, the search can be done by Title, Language, Publisher, ISBN/ISSN, etc.. All metadata available is displayed with a link to the publisher platform using the institution' subscription.

Various filtering criteria is available for narrowing down the results: alphabetically sorting, faceting by Type and Language.

Publishers

The Publishers widget displays the subscribed publishers in a grid layout by their logos.  Clicking on a specific logo will open a popup with a small description on the publisher and the subscribed products. Direct links to the subscribed products using the institutional subscription are available.

Resources

All resources available for search within the Muse® Application are displayed in the Resources widget. The user can view them organized by their groups or in an alphabetic listing, A to Z like. Alphabetic sorting is available along with a filtering form to quickly locate the desired resource.

A description is available on the Info icon next to each resource, with a link to the publisher platform using the institutional subscription.

Search Form

The main search form has by default a single input that can be extended to multiple inputs for specifying complex boolean queries using the And/Or/Not operators. The search attributes can be selected from the dropdown next to the input, along with the behavior in case of multi words (All these words or This exact phrase).

Muse® Application Search Results Page

The Search Results Page has a grid layout just as the Home Page, with various widgets available for processing the search results. All features are fully configurable by the administrator through the Muse® Console for Application Administration (MCAA).

Overview

The search results are presented in the center column using a modern layout with all pagination controls for browing the entire resultset. Besides the search results, there are many widgets available for various actions against the results:

  • Searched Sources widget which displays how many results each searched source reported and allows filtering by source, e.g. to see only the results retrieved by a certain source.
  • Manage your Results widget which provides various features such as sending the selected records by email, saving them into various formats and export into reference managers, etc.
  • Refine your Results widget which provides faceting functionality.

In Side Search widgets are displayed a number of predefined results obtained by searching the user query against specialized data sources, like Dictionary and Wikipedia.

Searched Sources

This widget presents the list with all searched sources, their search status and how many hits each reported. A filtering input is available to narrow down the list. The list with the searched sources can be displayed alphabetically ascending or descending, or by the number of hits reported, ascending or descending.

Clicking on a source name will filter the results to get only the results retrieved by that source.

Manage your Results

This widget which provides the following features:

  • Send the selected results by email;
  • Save the selected results in various formats such as HTML, Text, Raw, XML, MARCXML, Atom, RIS, EndNote, PDF;
  • Export the selected results to third party reference managers or cloud storage;
  • Print the selected results;
  • Save the selected results into the temporarily list across multiple searches;
  • Keep/Delete the selected results in/from the current resultset.

Refine your Results

This widget displays lists of relevant terms from your results grouped by various criteria. A distillation process extracts the most relevant terms from the records received from a search. Each term is associated an entity, a weight making it more or less relevant and a count to know in how many records it was found. By clicking on any of the terms in the list, a refine action is performed using that term to filter the current results set.

The number of terms extracted for each entity is presented in the corresponding badge. Various entities may be available, depending on the current configuration made by the administrator: by Keywords, Authors, Dates, Content Type, Language, Locations, Products, Companies.

The weight of a term gets bigger as it is found in more relevant fields, e.g.: a term found in the Title field of a record will have a bigger weight than one found in the Description field.

Results Display, Sorting and Deduplication

The following post search actions to handle the results are available:

  • Choose the record display level. Each display level offers a different degree of metadata details for display: One Line Record, Brief Record Detail, Record Detail. Advanced record displays are available: Text, Raw Data, XML, Atom, RIS, EndNote.
  • Sorting by multiple criteria: Relevance, Title (A-Z), Title (Z-A), Author (A-Z), Author (Z-A), Date (Oldest), Date (Newest), Source (A-Z), Source (Z-A).
  • Remove Duplicates By: Title, DOI.

Side Search Widgets, Related Queries and Images

Side Searches widgets are configured by the Muse® System Administrator to display results from various pre-configured and specialized sources, such as dictionary or encyclopedia resources that provide expanded information about the searched terms.

The Related Queries widget is offering related search suggestions for the current searched term(s). The related query terms are actually queries used by other users in the same system.

The Images widget displays in a carousel all records images along with the record Title and source information. Clicking on an image opens the image viewer.

Muse® Application Help and Administration

Contextual help is available in the Muse® Application for each widget/section. All application features and customizations are done entirely through a web based administration console - the Muse® Console for Application Administration (MCAA).

Muse® Application Help

Muse® Application Help gives the user all the explanations necessary to use the whole set of features he/she has in hand. All the features are largely explained and grouped thus it is easy to quickly identify the needed section. There are also displayed System Information as ICE (Information Connection Engine) and Application versions.

Sources Administration

The Muse® Console for Application Administration (MCAA) is the tool used by Muse® Partner Support and Implementation personnel to manage the Muse® Source Packages from inside Muse® applications.

Sources Configuration

Source details can be configured in detail via the Muse® Console for Application Administration. The administration interface gives access to Source specific details as Name, URLs, Authenticators to use, credentials to connect with, but also connections parameters. Connection parameters can be set to best tune network configuration to meet more environments.
