Why do I get errors when starting Muse Monitor in a graphical environment?

The error

Can't connect to X11 window system server using ':0.0' as the value of theDISPLAY variable

appears when running a graphical application as root into a X-Window session started by another user. This is a security protection which applies to all graphical applications (Firefox as example) and is not specific to Muse or java applications.

To be able to run graphical applications as the root user one must give specific permissions to the current X-Window session by running the following command in a terminal as the user which runs the X session (not root):
xhost +local:
